The Future

When ever anyone thinks of the future they consider the good things, however the world is a broken mess ruled over by corporations. The Romans used renewable energy and we've started to again with geothermal heating in certain places, yet still we rely on gas and other non-renewable sources of energy to endure the cold within our homes because they are convenient. Likewise we rely on petroleum for our transportation because it's convenient, however we've had prototype green vehicles since the 1920s and that of course is if we exclude the venerable advent of sails.

Why do we use fuels that run out or we have to import? Because we like the tax rates for funding from imports, the ease of convenience and the profits. We are beginning to care far too late for the world to not face war over the dwindling profitable resources and land suitable for 'crops'. However every country could easily find enough wild crops within their own countries to minimize the need for imported produce, all that's needed is to adjust to a wider palate much like our ancient ancestors and best evidenced by the Romans and the middle ages. Of course such steps couldn't be made overnight and the world will still erupt as the dwindling convenient resources are hoarded. The worlds population will cull itself and then we'll see humanity start to stabilise slowly.

The only thing we can do is to globally attempt to make people more aware of the wild produce they can find in their own country's countryside and that can even be grown in their own gardens. Of course we grow the popular produce but there is plenty more that can be eaten or used, for example Rose Hip, Prickly Rose, Goosegrass/Cleavers, Daisies, Nettles, Dandelions & Burdock. Of course the list is far more extensive then that, however for the most part we'd rather by something from one store rather than wander around a market or learn to do it ourselves.

The result of that? We increase the choke hold of fuel as we're forced to import goods and unless we cut the purse strings and look to our own country for foods, we'll take all that much longer to recover to recover from the world collapsing on it's current unsustainable means. Of course we'll never completely manage to fade out imported produce and nor should we, but we shouldn't rely primarily on that as it decreases the survival chances of each and every person in the event of the global situation stopping imports and exports cold. It's a very sad and very true thing, when was the last time anyone remembers being taught or teaching someone to make something solely with foods grown locally?

Have a think on that, as for me I intend to learn to survive as I have always done and I intend to teach any children I have as many survival skills as I can regardless of the funny looks I might get. However I also wouldn't shy away from convenience goods myself. I can enjoy them, however I know how to adapt to not having them should the need arise and I have recipes that can replace certain ones. That said I would very much prefer to avoid voicing sentiments like this over the internet because it really isn't the right forum for these kinds of things.
